The focus of this issue is anterior knee pain in the athlete. Of the review articles included, there is a review of the aetiology, biomechanics, diagnosis and management of patellofemoral pain in cyclists. Patellar tendinopathy is discussed, particularly the pathomechanics, and a modern approach to treatment, and there is a broad overview of the management options for anterior knee pain. The role of orthoses in the treatment of patellofemoral pain in runners is examined.

The clinical anatomy of the patellofemoral joint is described, as well as non-operative patellofemoral pain management that has recently been shown to be extremely effective in a double blind, placebo-controlled, multi-centre clinical trial.

A thorough, individualised assessment of athletes with disabilities is crucial to the successful application of sports nutrition strategies is highlighted.
