Ankle injuries in sport: Part 1

This issue contains review articles mainly on the diagnosis and management of ankle injuries in the athlete. There is one review article that provides an update on the prevention of ankle sprains in sport, which introduces Part 2 of this issue to be published next, and that will focus on the prevention and rehabilitation of ankle injuries in sport. In the article on syndesmotic ankle sprains in athletes, current literature is reviewed that relates to ligamentous injuries that affect the distal tibiofibular joint in athletes. The imaging features of common ankle injuries are discussed according to the anatomic location of the symptoms they produce. The various imaging modalities available are also briefly overviewed. A review of scintigraphy in both the diagnosis of bone and soft tissue sporting injuries in the ankle at the nascent stage, prior to the onset of concomitant anatomical changes, is also presented.
