THE FOCUS FOR THIS ISSUE: Acute and chronic muscle injuries in sport
This issue continues from the theme of Part 1 (Delayed onset muscle soreness: ISMJ Vol.5 No.2, 2004), and focuses on acute and chronic muscle injuries in sport. There is a paper on the relationship between muscle strength and balance and acute muscle injury and a paper on pre-season interventions which are associated with a reduced risk of injury during the season. Regarding diagnosis and treatment, there are papers on the clinical approach to the diagnosis and management of acute injuries, compression therapy treatment of acute muscle injury, treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and hyperbaric oxygen. These papers are followed by a brief review of chronic muscle strains in sport.
