This issue contains four articles that discuss the role of exercise in older persons, including mature athletes. Keller and Fleury discuss the role of exercise in the management of cardiovascular risk reduction in older adults. Still the number one cause of morbidity and mortality in many countries, cardiovascular disease continues to be closely linked to a deficiency of exercise/physical activity. Godfrey and Blazevich examine the growth-hormone response to exercise, with particular attention to the mature athlete. The role of the endocrine system on age-related functional losses is not fully understood and deserves more attention. Rawson et al. look at the effects of creatine supplementation on muscle function in older men and women; the need to understand the interaction between exercise and diet has never been more germane.
